With the urgency of urban loneliness as a point of departure, I analyse the alienating reality of contemporary city. Through the historical mapping of the feeling of loneliness, using language as a lead, I trace its emergence to modernity (the industrial revolution, secularization, rapid urbanization,..). I make sense of its persistence in the contemporary city, determining its link to the neoliberal system and the gradual commodification of the city environment. I pin down specific characteristics of the urban fabric that aggravate the feeling of loneliness and dissociation, making the city a hostile environment in which it is difficult to make-home and dwell. Based on findings I sketch out ways to address the alienating circumstances and create a more convivial city.
The book combines theoretical and practical work, it is a collection of observations, analyses, diagrams, approaches and design proposals. Together they provide an understanding of the problematic and outline ways of addressing it.
